if you have to get a modem.. get 3com. Stay away from winmodems for the most part because they arent really modems. They are software emulated modems. So if you ever decide to change Os's it will no longer function.
I like and use External modems(w/high quality cable). I like the ability to just turn the damn thing off programs start dialing and for troubleshooting dialup problems. Nothing is more annoying then talking on the phone when your PC decides its going to send a fax from last year!Quote:

Tech GOD
I have to put in a vote for external modems as well. Last modem I bought was in the middle of the PCI winmodem or ISA hardware modem days. Forseeing the end of ISA, I got an external (Diamond SupraExpress 56e). Since then, I've never regretted getting it - not only easier to debug, but also keeps the PCI cards from crowding (with AGP, SCSI, and SB, I've got a gap between each card for better air flow). So, put one of those external serial ports to use!
Ive heard nothing but rave reviews for the Diamond Supra Express 56e. I'd also like to suggest the ELSA microlink 56K internet c. Its never given me a problem and i ping great on mp games.

Why Drink and Drive when you can Smoke and Fly?
Well, my desk is cluttered enough as-is so I opted for an old, cheap, good quality, 56K ISA modem since I had the extra ISA slot free and I could be sure I was getting a hardware modem. Being internal was no problem for me and the connections speeds are usually good. I would say a good cheap ISA modem should be seriously considered if you have no other use for the ISA slot.
most brand name modems are over rated
and modem technology hasn't improved that much for years
just make sure to get a pci modem
go generic - don't spend more than 40 bucks
buy another one if it ever craps out on you
oh yeah - if you want a pci modem for free
go to www.cyberrebate.com

If you are into gaming then an external modem is a necessity. If not then an internal modem (almost certainly winmodem) would be just fine.
