I am thinking of buying Western Digital 160 GB for $156 CAD because it is cheaper than Maxtor which is $168. Is there any difference between them? which one would you recommend? How about Seagate? is it a good brand?
thx in advance :)

In general, I'd feel comfortable recommending a drive by any of those three companies. Western Digital, Seagate, and Maxtor all generally make good products.
When selecting a drive, you should look at the differences between particular models, like drive speed, access time, and whatnot.
Seagate is, IMO, the best brand for reliability. WD is the best for speed and Maxtor is the best if you like RMA drives. :DQuote:

That said I don't buy Seagate IDE drives because they tend to have poor performance (but are very quiet).
So chalk up my vote for the WD.

Basically what he said. Seagates are the quietest but not the fastest. But if you get a SATA, it can make a difference. I was surprised that my 160 sata seagate defrags, chkdsk's, and burns faster from than my 120 WD JB ide. But then again, WD sata's are probably a little faster than seagates satas.Quote:

Maxtor is a good company that I had a few drives crash on and some problems getting an RMA, so I don't buy from then anymore. Generally though their drives run well, so I hear. WD is REALLY GOOD about RMAing drives, and I've never had a Seagate crash on me (I've got a working 1gig seagate drive with no bad sectors  ), so I don't know how thier RMA is.
guys, sorry for my ignorance, but what is RMA?
Return Merchandise Authorization.Quote:

In order to return something you usually need an RMA number, which allows the company to track the product. You need to get one instead of just blindly sending the drive back and hoping you ever see it again.

I have Maxtor 160GB 8mb sata and the thing is not quiet .Under load you can clearly hear the HDD , but is a fast drive and cooled with a fan never pass 21/celsius .
But if they have problems with RMA service you better get a WD ,..i always liked WD , they make great drives .
Ya i've seen some awesome prices on Ebay from 120 gig WD Hard Drives but im not sure if i shoudld get one...i get really mixed reviews on them... some people say there loud...some people say they aren't...my friend tells me to get a seagate...but there a little bit more expensive...but damn quite i hear...
so im just tryin to find out if paying for a cheapt WD is worth it...it seems more and more that it is...
