Does anyone know of a utility that will spin down the hard drive? I know that you can set a time to spin down the hard drives with "Power Options", but I would like something that will do it automatically and immediately.
Thanks in advance.

This may help .
Poweroff

Poweroff is a small program that allows you to control the power state of your pc.
Only thing I found was this-http://www.hddtemp.com/home/index.html
Obviously spins down HDs in response to HD temperatures. Not sure if you can set the shutdown temp on specific HDs thus forcing a shutdown.
Download PowerOff page here .

Thanks for the quick responses, I'm so glad I found Sharky's. Not to sound unappreciative b/c I'm not, but the above-mentioned programs don't seem to quite fit the bill.
I just built my present PC and I have two hard drives with it, a Samsung and a WD. As you can see from my config in my signature I am trying to quiet things down. To this end, the Samsung is my main drive and is pretty quiet, the WD (an older drive from previous computer) is really noisy; it squeals like a stuck pig. I am looking for a spin down utility for the WD so I can immediately spin it down instead of waiting for 3 minutes as set in Power Options.
ok last go- there is a utility on this page-

called sleep hdd but its for DOS. not sure if you could use it from the command prompt.
I couldn't get the utility to work for, but thanks for all the effort. Guess I'll just have to deal with the 3 minutes of whining.
Thanks again.
maybee this tool will help you:
revosleep (h**p://revosleep.realspooky.de). revoSleep lets your hard disk sleep in few seconds. You can lock different hard disks, so you can be sure they won't wake up.
Use the Control Panel, Advanced Power options to set the HD to shutdown after 1 minute of no use.
Any utility that would not have time span would end up trashing the HD. The Drive has to close itself when it is safe and quite. You cannot decide since the drive works according to cache status and OS needs.Quote:

You will never get the Windows OS drive to shut down because it is always working updating logs, etc.
