Tips on Migrating to a new NAS?

I currently have a D-Link DNS-320 2-bay NAS and want to upgrade to the Synology DS212J 2-bay. My Dlink has 2x2TB drives running in RAID-1 and about 60% full; im trying to figure out the best way to safely transfer all the data...

The only way that I can think of is to pull one of the 2TB drives, format it in the Synology NAS and manually transfer everything over ethernet (Dlink -> Synology)... then pull the other drive and and let RAID rebuild... problem with this is that I am vulnerable to data loss during the transfer... any tips?

If you are concerned with data loss, I'd get a 2 TB external HDD and transfer to that and then copy to the new NAS

My ZyXEL enclosure has a USB connection so I can hook up an external USB HDD to the NAS and then via "sync" button, sync it to the external HDD. Yours doesn't have that kind of functionality?

i dont even want to think about how long it would take to transfer 1.5gb over USB 2.0... i would prefer to do it over gigabit ethernet

It's the cheapest data loss prevention method. Will it take a long *** time? Yes! Is it worth the wait for peace of mind? Definitely!

I, personally, would not be moving drives between NAS's without being 100% sure I had a functional backup of some kind.

sounds like i need to grab a 3rd 2tb drive somewhere... sucks that i bought them for $50 a pop last year and now they are all over $100

Yeah drive costs are incredibly high compared to a year ago. The drives I use on some of our servers are in the $349+ range for 2TB (WD RE4/Seagate Constellation/etc.). I use to be able to get these for < $249.
