I don't know about android specifically, but get the Kindle App for sure.
Google Reader is better on the tablet than on the phone...
There are quite a few tablet-optimized games out there as well... If you watch any video online, Netflix is a must.
Yes, that is a function of the book provider. Also one can read many books free for an hour in a B&N store. Often that is enough time to read an entire title otherwise one can return another day and continue reading.
I've never read a Kindle book. I am very pleased with my Nook readers. I have 2 - an original and a Touch. IMO which product is best is more about where you wish to purchase content and what formats your local public library supports. Kindle and Nook have similar features. The entry level Kindle has advertising that can't be turned off.
For ebooks, I recommend Aldiko! Supports most formats!
AFAIK you can't do that with a Kindle.
When visiting B&N and connecting to their wi-fi network, one can read many of their e-books free for an hour per day. There are some e-books that are not part of the free service. The B&N near my house has a nice cafe in it to make reading quite comfortable while sipping Starbucks beverages and eating a sandwich and/or a dessert.
