LGA 2011 CPU or LGA 1155 - which is faster?

I am thinking of getting a X-79 LGA 2011 motherboard, and I am looking at getting the Intel Core i7-3820 which is about $300.

Do you think the i7-3820 LGA 2011 and a top-end mobo, would be faster than a Core i7-2600K LGA 1155 and a top-end motherboard?

The LGA 1155 combo would be about $50 cheeper, but would the LGA 2011 combo be faster?

Depends on what you want. The 2600k will be faster in games when overclocked to 4.4Ghz. The 2011 sockets shine with highly threaded programs. Unless you go for the 500+ dollar 2011 chips then there isn't a reason to go with that socket.

Quad channel memory and more PCIe lanes definitely qualify it as "faster" from a purely numbers based standpoint (more bandwidth), but in real world use, especially for single user tasks it isn't worth the extra cost, heat, and power consumption.

Yeah, it seems that unless I go for the $600 Core i7-3630K, then LGA 2011 is probably not the best bet.

I wonder if they will make a lower priced six core CPU for LGA 2011 in the next year or so?
