Actually I have a triple boot with Win98SE, Win2kPro and WinXPpro.
Win98SE is very fast on my System. So I would try a dual boot. With WinXP it's very easy.

You could try replacing the dll file with a fresh one from your CD or

Also if you have a Scanner try removing/reinstalling the Software...

Try going into Device Manager and remove/uninstall the CD Drives. Let
Windows reinstall them on next Bootup.

When you do switch IDE Channels does the Hard Drive work OK in the
Secondary Master Position? Could you boot from the Hard Drive in that position? Are they set to Auto detect in the Bios?

I have a Gainward GF3-Ti-200 and I can't use the 40.xx series drivers. I get the same symptoms. Went back to 30.xx and it works fine.
