Prescott reaching 78 degrees celcius at default speeds??

Despite what my signature says, i've been running the CPU at its default 3.0ghz speed when i dont need the extra power. I played a few games of UT and downloaded a bunch of files today. The computer was on for about 3hours so far tops, and the cpu has reached such a high temperature at default speeds. Im currently using a ThermalTake spark7 (regular edition) cooler which is supposed to be able to handle prescott cpus as high as 3.6ghz.

I know prescotts run hot, but is 78 degrees celcius an acceptable temperature for this CPU or is it going to end up in an early grave? please help, thanks

    My 2.4C @ 3.2Ghz after playing 2 hrs Doom 3, 45 tops. Its idle temperature is 36 degrees @ noon, 32 @ night.

Your temperature is definitely too high... any CPU higher than 70 degrees is not normal...

Yikes! Something isn't working right here. ComputerManiacs, your cpu runs a lot cooler than mine, but could it be because your cpu is a northwood and mine is a prescott? since 78 degrees is way too hot, which cpu cooler should i invest in? also, i'll try replacing the thermal glue to see if that helps. Thanks guys

UPDATE: Now the cpu has chilled down to a more reasonable 64degrees celcius on its own, i dont know what could possibly be an issue here.

just check the background processes and see which is using the cpu when you think it should be idle.

and I am using the Zalman 7000-CU here... its really quiet...

I don't see how your temp could possibly be that high without some kind of setup error.

Make sure you have a good (not too much or too little - for tips on application see Arctic Silver's website) amount of TIM between your HSF and CPU.

Is your CPU fan blowing in the correct direction (down towards the heat sink, in most applications)?

Do you have any case airflow?

I have fairly decent case air flow. Inside my case the temp is 41degrees celcius. The problem is my cpu jumps up about 20 degrees during games. Today i realized that @ idle my cpu is around 59degrees (celcius) and once the game gets goin for a while and i check cpu temp, it reads about 79degrees celcius. Im going by what my MSI core center is telling me. im gonna check my thermal grease later on. YOu're probably right about the setup error. i'll tell you how everything goes tomorrow wwhen i get home from work. thanks guys

eh, thats not a bad case temp actually. the case in my room right now is running at 45C, but the CPU is still down at 39C. or it could just be the DFI hardware monitor is faulty at case temps like the Abit IC7-G is with its CPU temps.

then again, my room is usually about 80 degrees year round cause of poor air circulation (1 vent in the entire room, second biggest bedroom in house) i think u can put the picture together.

Try downloading MBM 5 and see what it tells u. it could just be the temp guage on ur mobo is faulty..

I've actually never measured the temperature in this room, but its nowhere near hot in here. I have two HUGE windows with a nice draft every now and then. My old willamette used to run at about 40 degrees at idle, and 45-50 degrees under load in this same exact setup. The environment seems okay.

What i did do is use the same thermal grease i had left over from about 1.5 years ago when i installed this heatsink on my old 1.8ghz willamette cpu. Could this be whats making my cpu run so hot?

Right now, 3.0E is idling at 53-54 degrees celcius but during doom 3 (yeah i downloaded it for free :-D) i can catch the cpu running at near 79-80 degrees. This cpu isn't even a week old...

Do you guys know if stores like comp usa sell thermal grease? Thanks again

munchy1988, where can i download this mbm 5?

sounds like bad case airflow my case temps never go above 34c and my 2.8e @ 3.2 never hits 55c after a good hour of doom3.. I would remove the hsf and put a thin layer of AS on... oh and get a sp-94 hsf its the best you can get and dropped my temps on the prescott a good 5 degrees

and yes compusa will have your thermal goo needs

Who makes the sp-94 hsf? a website would be well appreciated.

Update: now idling at 55 degrees jumping up 5-10 degrees now, after re applying the thermal grease. Should i just settle for this?

That is not possible. Either your "case" reading is really measured at a heat source, or one or both of your temp monitors is faulty.

exocer: The SP-94 is made by Thermalright.

I have a question about the SP-94. Since i haven't been able to find it with a fan, which fan is compatible to install on this heatsink?

Update: current temp is 56 degrees celcius at idle, jumping up to about 65-70 under load AFTER re-applying thermal grease.

Oh yeah, my new monitor comes today, maybe that'll drop my cpu temps thanks guys
