Best Hard Drive - $150 Range?
I currently have a Maxtor 20 gig. I've had it for several years. It Kicked *** when I got it, It's 7200 RPM and has 2mb of chache. Everyone back then was saying that maxtor was bad, but it's given me no problems at all. Now, as much as I'd like to dump the rest of my money into a new sound card or some such, I really know I need a bigger hard drive. I have $100 now and my birthday is right around the cornner. (Feb 25) I should get at least $50 then.. I can also probably get some more work from my friend's dad. Bottom line, even if I can get more money, I don't think it's worth the extra $50 to go from an 80 gig to a 100 gig. I guess what I'm asking, is what's the best 80 gig. Also, where should I get it? I know newegg some ok looking deals. Going by the specs the best drive there is the Maxtor. They have an 80 gig for I think $155 shipped. It is 7200rpm, has 2 mb of chache, 8.5 ms seek time and it's the only one there I see that has ATA/133. (Though I think my mobo can do 66, MAYBE 100. It's an Intel D815EEA.. I know, I know...) However, there is a seagate and a Wester Digital with very simmilar though slightly less impressive stated specs for around the same price. I hear lot's of people sugesting Seagote over Maxtor and I also hear some people saying to stay away from Western Digital. Can anyone support either of these statements? I know my Maxtr has been very good to me and I also know the Western Digital has, or used to have, a great reputation. Also, how are the IBM drives?

Don't bother paying the extra $50 for the drive and spend that on a soundcard. Buy yourself a ibm 80gb. For all intents and purposes, a hd is a hd. The big deal is warranty. will they give you 3years or some bs oem 1yr. the lifespan for a hd that will get the usage yours will (all that pr0n swapping ) will hit that 3yr mark and stary clicking. Buy ibm over maxtor unless you really are gonna get a ata133 card or something.

Top 4 ways to start a flame war on sharky:
1.) Go into the CPU forum and ask why P4's are so much better than Athalons?
2.) Go into the Video card forums and ask which is better, a geforce3 ti500 or a radeon 8500?
3.) Go into the Video Cards Forum and call 3dmark stupid and pointless.
4.) Go into the General Hardware forum and ask what the best possible system is if money isn't an issue.

Try the Seagate Baracuda IV. I think it's the one with the fluid bearings which means it is really quiet. Seagate are pretty reliable too. There's no need to get an ATA/133 drive when you'll never see those kinds of speeds.

Maxtor ata-133 80 gig. Just don't forget to register it on their site for the 3 year warranty.

I don't mind the noise at all. You only hear it when it's working, and then, I LIKE to hear it! That way I know exactly what it's doing. I think I will probably get the Maxtor, It seems to have the best specs and I have no reason not ti like Maxtor. I think that in large part, Anijo is correct.
