Installing win2k from DOS

Recently acquired a windows 2k cd from my dad (he got it through some deal but doesn't want it, win98 is too complicated for him as it is) So I figuired I'd run it. I want to wipe out my me install and start fresh, this says it's the full version + upgrade. I slap in my 98 boot disk and just tell the computer to load with cdrom support. Get to dos prompt and try launching setup.exe from the cdrom.

"This program cannot be run from dos"

Baru?


Any work around for this or am I going to have to install ME on my secondary drive just to intall 2k on the main drive?

it be best to copy all the 2k setup files to your hard drive first. create a dir under your c drive and then copy all the file and dirs under the i386 dir on the 2k cd, and then run WINNT from within your hard drive i386 dir. remember to remove the 98 boot disk.

INstead of booting off the win98 startup, Boot off the windows 2000 cd itself. This can be done in the bios. You should have no problems from tehre

Tried that, for some odd reason it won't boot. Checked the bios, it's set to boot off my cdrw drive, put the cd and it just loads windows like normal.

Assuming it's a genuine Microsoft CD...

Step 1: Get yourself four blank 1.44 MB floppy disks.

Step 2: Boot to your Win98 boot disk with CD support.

Step 3: From the command prompt, run X:\BOOTDISK\MAKEBOOT.EXE (where X: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). This will make the Windows 2000 setup floppy set.

Step 4: Insert Disk 1 of the set you just made and reboot the system. Follow the instructions on the screen, and Windows 2000 installation will start.

I had the same problem until I made the 32-bit version boot disks. Same steps as SkyDog mentioned except use:

makebt32.exe

instead of makeboot.exe.

Use MAKEBOOT.EXE if your running the program from a DOS or Windows 9x boot floppy command prompt. Use MAKEBT32.EXE if you're running the program from within Windows.

I had the sam problem. I made the boot disks in Windows 98 off of the Win 2K CD. All you have to do is navigate to makeboot.exe on the CD and click on it. Just Follow the instructions. My CD wouldn't boot either so I had to follow these steps. It takes four floppies.
