    Can't Overclock Q6600 on XFX 780i?

I've been doing a ton of research on this topic (probably should have done it before I bought the system) and I am reading that I cannot increase the multiplier of the q6600 above 9x? I know I did actually read reviews on Newegg of people saying "Ohh its really easy to overclock on this board and I have the Q6600 CPU" Are they just full of crap?

I read this on the nforce overclocking pdf...

    http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/45121/...erclocking.pdf

"Note: At the time of this document’s release, only the multiplier of the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor is fully unlocked. Therefore, this is the only Core 2 Duo CPU where you can change the multiplier from its default value. All other Intel Core 2 Duo processors are hard locked and you will not be able to adjust the multiplier."

I am somewhat new to overclocking, I have overclocked my previous 2 machines and it has always been pretty easy through the bios by increasing the multiplier and voltage etc.

So can I overclock this setup above a 2.4? If so how can I? I would like to get around a 3.0-3.2 on air. Thanks in advance.

for the q6600, you change the fsb not the multiplier to overlock.

from what i've seen (bear in mind i haven't ever overclocked) it should be fairly easy to get 3.0-3.2 GHz

Yeah the multiplier isn't what you go after. The Q6600 has a locked multiplier, and is blocked from going any higher. The Extreme series allows you to increase the multiplier to a higher number, 12 I think is the max. However, the FSB has tons of room to increase. I run my bus at 1600 MHz, which brings the Q6600 to 3.6 GHz.

You can alter the multiplier setting, but only down, not up. You will need to increase the FSB to overclock that chip.

it's funny that some people come to these boards asking us to design their entire setup. and some posts are like this.

i'm curious what the max FSB your Q6600 will run at as well, considering you're on a 780. don't go over 1.4 volts. Even if you have the thermal envelope for it, I promise you the motherboard will hold you back, I just want to know where.

Unfortunately, the NV series of mobo chipsets are notorious for having issues overclocking quad processors. Unless some one commits to absolutely wanting SLI, I always recommend Intel chipset based boards.

Thanks for the help guys, after reading through the how to guide kingzayd linked I went back into the bios. The problem is I cannot find where to increase the Bus Speed of 266.7. I can change the Rated FSB, its set at 1066.8 but I dont want to do that do I?

i think u change the rated fsb, which is 4x ur bus speed, but don't take my word for it, i wouldn't want you destroying anything on account of bad advice on my part.

Yep, figured I would just try changing the Rated FSB and that seemed to have worked. Don't know if this is the correct way of overclocking but I dont see any other way.

    What pci speeds?

when u raise the fsb, u're overclocking the entire system, not just the processor, if u don't limit the pci speeds u could end up screwing up ur pci cards as they run at speeds they're not designed to. that's how i understand it.. i recommend u read the guide in depth

You're referring to the "PCI Express Frequency – Set this to 100 MHz" and
"PCI Clock Synchronization - Use 33.33 MHz" correct?

I was able to set the frequency to 100MHz but because of the different bios setup on this board I cannot find where I change the synchronization to 33.33.

I actually printed your guide out and highlighted everything I needed to do. Thanks again king, your guide has helped me out a ton.

oh ok, and it's not my guide btw, i know very little about overclocking, but i was planning to do something similar to what you're doing when my hardware is on the verge of being redundant. i just went to the relevant thread and copied and pasted the address

Well, I installed the forceware beta junk for 780i. It does give you access to all but a very few bios options, every page, and nearly every option!! The ones you cant set dynamically are weird ones ya dont touch anyways. That feature is kinda neat, and the bios updater through the nvidia forceware junk, it worked! Thats always a good thing. Interesting to note that the bios bin file, which was named some gibbleygook, was an nvidia bios rom.
Lead Generation was hoping that it would see more of the 2.75 it saw! Thats weak. And I was crying when it only showed 3.25!!! Guess it showed me!
Will keep ya updated, my b3 q6600 is a power hungry, fire breathing beast! While I could get it stable at 3.6, it was smoking hot, hehe. And the VCore appears to need to be very high to be stable at 3.2, hehe. So thats netting 77c on air if I run it on full load. Owww!
