What's the next big thing in custom PC's?
I'm not sure if I can stand to look at another PC with a window, CC's, and some LED's. When are gonna see some fresh ideas? I like what www.mini-itx.com has going on, but that's for the mini-itx platform.

I think it's gonna be anti-modding. How plain can you get your rig to look

Can you imagine? "Look how beige that case is! 2 coats of clear coat and now it's shinny-beige."

Nooo, shiny isn't good. We want plain as can be!
"Wow, look at xp1800's rig! Look how time has aged the faceplates color on his 4x CD-ROM. It's amazing how well the color of his case reminds me of my grandmothers nursing home...boring!"

8 Wheels Move The Soul
A decrease in the rice-up look (which I hate even on real cars), and the increase in sleek & smooth. Kinda like the G5 and the new iMac.
It's funny. Apple not only changes the direction of the entire electronics industry, they also change the overall look of computers. The iMac did it - computers are starting to become smaller and have purty colors to them. Hate them as much as you want, they're industry geniuses.

The G5 is the only case from apple i have liked so far. I thought the G4 looked cheap since it was plastic. I also didn't like the colors of the previous imac.
By the way, thanks for not refering to Apple as Macs.

You wouldn't believe this, but I was thinking of converting a cd drive into a cup holder just yesterday... man that would be a sweet mod.

That's nothing new.

Now that I've thought about it I believe the only step forward in conventional cases is adding movement to different elements.
For example:

hydraulic doors
buttons that pop out at you
conceiled lcds that come out at the push of a button
This is the way cars have gone. Someone first started by tweaking an engine to get more horses, then someone figured out to put on a scoop to get more airflow. Then the exterior was changed to make the car look the part and also the internals were changed to give the driver the feeling of power and stability. These days cars have hydraulic doors that slide open when you press a button on your keychain, and some even have lights that move out and fold to give you speakers so you can sit and watch the tv that pops out of the trunk.
It is pretty much what has happened with pcs, someone tweaked the jumpers on their mobo to get 20 more mhz out of their Pentium. Then they figured out to put a larger heatsink on there to get rid of heat, and on top of that a better, faster fan. After that they gave their case a cool paintjob and put lights on the inside of the window they installed.
I don't know about you but to me that looks pretty similar so far... you be the judge.

smaller, better, faster. I think that the desktop will be a largely antiquated piece of hardware in 5 years, and laptops will have gained dominance. And at that point, it'll all be about custom skins, paint jobs, and cases.

i would definitely agree with other people about the whole integration thing. i think we will see more and more computers being modded into things you wouldn't normally think as a computer. almost more "stealth" mods (where you try and hide your computer as best you can but still leave it out in plain sight).
