    Constant boot problems, please help

I am running winxp pro and I have had this problem for a while.

Basically, on a fairly regular basis, when I boot I won't get to the winxp gui screen (With that little KIT thing going back and forth) and it just remains black until I restart. Usually, restarting a few times will solve the problem and it will boot fine.

I just did a format of my rig and reinstalled winxp and got the problem again, as well, I reset the cmos but it is still doing it.

When I booted the first time, it said hal.dll was missing. I have done some searching and it said to replace that, which I will try and do but does anyone have any other suggestions as to what is going on or how to fix it?

One trick that almost always seems to work is to change the IDE cable or change it the HD from master to cable select. After doing something like this, it boots fine until the next time.

I mean, how can formatting twice and reseting the cmos not solve all software problems?

    thanks
    GRIN.

Maybe you have a defective Winxp CD or your cd-rom is not reading all of it properly?

Try installing someone else's copy of Winxp on your comp and see if it works.
