Cannot load DOS! Any key to retry

"Cannot load DOS! Any key to retry"

Thats whats showing up on my screen after booting my computer with any utility disk for my hard drive, I havent tried a WinXX disk cuz i dont have one and cant find one on the net. Any idea what might be the problem? thnx aslo when I boot it without any disk... it just sits there with a black screen and a blinkin curser...

    Attempts to fix:
    - Restore Master Boot Record with XP CD
    - Moved around RAM to see if one was bad or something
    - Removed all my PCI devices, bone dry (mobo, cpu, ram, hard drive only)
    - Tried booting with different disk utilities for the hard drive (Maxtor Blast 3/ PowerMax 4.06) figuring the BIOS couldnt boot it cuz its a 40 gig and the BIOS is too old to handle it. But I doubt thats the case cuz it was reading it a week ago.

    Some Facts:
    - Started giving me problems after Installing a PCI FireWire
    - BIOS detects the Hard drive and everything else good.
    - I am running WinXP Pro
    - 350mhz CPU Pentium II
    - 256MB RAM (2*128MB)
    - Hard drive ran perfectly fine on two other computers two days ago...

sweet, thnx for the link... I found that website one time, but I couldnt find it again... Hmm... I tried the Win98 startup disk and it gave me this...

    - Disk I/0 error
    - Replace the disk, and then press any key

Whats it tryin to tell me? lol... I/O is Input and Output right?

Update: I just tried a DOS 6.22 disk and it says:

    - Non-system disk or disk error
    - Replace and press any key when ready

By any chance is there way to get windows started from the "repair" command off the XP CD? thnx...

Nope that wasnt it... connection is right... it goes to read it after BIOS is done detecting everything... and after reading the disk it says Cannot load DOS! Any key to retry. Is there a way to boot from XP CD repair command?

Just wanted to thank everyone that contributed to trying to figure this crap out... but I never really figured it out... I just simply put the XP CD in and Cliked INSTALL XP and thne it said if I wanted to INSTALL A COMPLETE NEW ONE or REPAIR the current one and I put repair... and it deleted files and copied files and went through the installation of XP thing... and 40 minutes late... WALLAH! Working again... Oh well as long as its working now
