Currently the gpu client only works with certain ATI cards (X1900 and up I think), and then with only certain drivers (I think anything recent is fine). But yeah, if you have a card that supports it you can run a seperate gpu client and have the cpu running another. You do loose a little time on the cpu client but the overall workload on that pc is still better than cpu only.

You need an ATI card at present, and AKAIK they do not recommend running both cpu and gpu folders together.
HERE is an FAQ page.

Out of commission for a while
Had to take down all my rigs and stick them in a closet to re-carpet, probably won't be back up until end of March since I'll be away until then.

I used to run a GPU client and CPU client together on a dual core Athlon. Points production was pretty good, but not as good as any form of SMP.

how much do you think a dual, dual-core intel xeon 2GHz would make, and how long do you think it would take it to do such a thing? with the mac smb client?

Two Woodcrests at 2GHz would produce a lot of points, somewhere around 3-4k per day running the SMP client for Mac OSX.

Wow, almost 3 months without a post in this thread. Guys I just wanted to put out there that if you have an nVidia card 8XXX series or higher you can now fold with it. These cards produce at a phenomenal rate, let's get them going.
Ah, and ATI 19XX and lower are no longer supported......retiring the X1950 in my home office PC for another card that folds now....whenever UPS shows up.

This is good to know, as I have an 8800 GTX. As soon as I get into my air conditioned apartment next month, I'll start folding again.

Good to hear xclite. The 8800GTX should put up some really good numbers for you/us. The only gpu I have folding right now is an "old" 1st gen 8800GTS. With a mild oc it is pulling in roughly 4400 points a day. I'll have an 8800gt and a 260 joining as early as this weekend to push things a little further.

I'm running the SMP client for my other team, collegeminds.net, with my 8800 GTX folding for Sharkyforums under xclite.

I'm buying a pair of 9800GTX (maybe + models, depends on price) for my two dual core AMD boxes that are now just barely able to finish the new SMP work units.
As far as I can tell, with the right drivers and everything, the nVidia cards are not very CPU bound at all. It make some difference, but not more than 200-300ppd from what I've seen. On a card that can pump out 4000ppd, that's not too bad. Especially considering they're just producing 500ppd or less right now with the new SMP WUs (they used to do well over 1000).

I'm actually curious: why is the ATI 19xx no longer supported? I don't see how it hurts them to accept additional units from these graphics cards.

I'm not sure, all I know is they want 2xxx and higher now. It could just be that with this new gpu client they are doing more complex wu's and the 19's wouldn't finish them within the deadline.
