XP installation freezes at "Registering Components"

I am trying to do a fresh install of XP on my friends PC when about 14 minutes left while "registering components" the installation freezes. What exactly is XP doing at this time and what should I do? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

More than likely WinXP doesn't like something to do with how the HD is configured. Check cabling, jumpers, etc. Does the BIOS correctly id the HD?

Yes, the bios does detect it correcty. I just noticed that it is setup as Secondary-Master. I'll switch it to primary and see what happens.

OK, tell us all the devices on each IDE port and how they're cabled and jumpered. A typical setup would look something like this:

Primary, IDE1 = HD1 (boot drive) jumpered as Master, on end of cable, DVD jumpered as Slave, on middle connector of cable.

Secondary, IDE2 = HD2 jumpered as Master, on end of cable, CDRW jumpered as Slave, on middle connector

Primary = Hard Drive - jumpered as master - on middle of cable(changed to end)

Secondary = CDRom - jumpered as master- on end of cable

I pulled out all cards except for video and one memory stick. IT NOW WORKS! After installation completes I will put everything back in and pray to god it still works. Thanks

I think i could be your IDE drivers. If your using an onboard Promise comtroller i would switch to the standard IDE and leave it by itself and CD on secondary IDE. I had this problem a year or 2 ago and i kicked it real hard and it worked fine but i trashed gods name that day so probably got back at me for it. Lol try what i said and good luck.
