modem problem in Win XP

I am having an 56kbps Dlink internal modem.I have installed Windows 98 and Windows XP on my system. When i dial a connection to my ISP on Windows 98 i here the ringing sound on my speaker only not in my modem. When i do the same in my Windows XP os i here the ringing sound on the modem. How to rectify this problem?

What problem? Windows XP is functioning as designed.
If you want to silence the modem you can adjust the sound from Device Manager.
