AMD A64 3800+ and 4000+ just not worth the money? A64 3500+ still the best option?

Was curious what others thought about the Amd Athlon 64 line up on the 939 side. Seems like the 3500+ is really where it's at. $275 or so, less than HALF what the 3800+ sells for. The 4000+ seems outrageous as well. I had thought the 3800+ would drop to the $375-$399 range by now, but it seems to be locked in at $600 or so. Guess that makes the 3500+ the one worth having, don't you think?

the 3000+ is the one you want. Easy overclocks to 2.6, that's 50%.

yep..definately a 3000+ with a nice xp-120 u'll get pretty impressive speeds with it, and plus the 120mm will be uber quiet

Have the feeling that Tbird will budge in with something. Anyways, the 3500+ looks like the best choice. And it defintely is thanks to the opinons from our fellow sharks.

3500+ if you have the money to spend and/or want to run it at stock.

3000+ if you prefer to overclock.

if you go 3500+ - go with 90nm winchester (heard sharks and others say it runs cooler than the 130nm newcastle). But the 3000+ OEM is cheap, can be o/c, and since it's 939, can be upgraded The multiplier on the 3000+ is 9x, but both 3500+ models it's 11x.

I'm not too fond of the marketing ploy of using the same name "3400+" when there's a 200mhz loss between the

    64 3400+ skt 939 @ 2.2G (11x mult only though).....

You're forgetting the S754 3400+ Clawhammer, like mine. It comes clocked at a default 2.2ghz too (200x11=2200mhz) Calwhammers have 1mb L2 cache, making them more efficient, thus less clockcycle's needed when compared to Newcastle cores.

as mikey said, AMD rates by performance. Apparently, they thought that the performance of the 3400+'s was similar.

Wow man. Too much info for my small little brain. I just figured that a 3500+ being less than half of a 3800+ in cost would be a good deal. I don't overclock - just don't wanna, so I want to buy the fastest I can reasonably justify. Paying another $300-$350 for the 3800+ over the 3500+ just doesn't seem worth it, at least on the surface. I'd just be snaggin' the Retail version and use stock cooling. Maybe with the tax refund I can snag the setup. Won't be all that much faster than my P4 2.8ghz (533mhz fsb with 1 gig of PC1066 RDRAM) some say, but I guess I'm just jonesin' to get an A64 system. I can't really justify it, I just kinda want to do something. Been almost 2 years since the last purchase, after all. I'm getting withdrawal!

The 3500+ sounds great for what you want.

I bet you could get at least 2.8GHz with a Ti4200.

you're absolutely correct, and when I had investigate in the past, I guess I immediately dismissed them b/c of price....I too am a fan of 1MB L2 cache - what a shame the $$ needed to get that.

Hmmmmmm, don't know about EASY, but close.....BTW, are you assuming 1:1 or a mem divider??

    First rule of overclocking.

    1. A specific overclock is never guaranteed, so purchase a chip that you will be happy with assuming it won't overclock at all.

Out of 3 3000+'s that I've seen personally, 2 have done 2.6 out of the box. With a boxed hsf, and just one quick keystroke in the BIOS. The third one ended up doing 2.55 prime stable, and would surely have done 2.6 with a decent hsf.

I did these with dividers because the memory I put into those rigs wasn't great, but it should be doable without too.

I never said the likelyhood wasn't good, just that it isn't guaranteed. I can guarantee you that some of those chips are binned at that speed because that is the best they could do stable, and some of the chips that would do higher may only have been 2.2GHz stable chips.

Motherboards are still a factor. Using the same CPU and memory on two identical motherboards can yeild o/c reults with quite some difference.

Buying your parts you will be happy with regardless of whether it overclocks at all is a good way to avoid disappointment and wasted money.
