    eVGA 6600GT is LOUD

    hey guys,

just bought an eVGA 6600GT 128MB PCI-express card for my new rig. it performs really well, but there is one thing that bothers me. it's LOUD! i've tried unplugging it's fan, and without a doubt, it's the loudest thing on my rig. so i'm thinking of sending it back to newegg and getting a different 6600GT if they'll let me. does anybody have any recommendations for a quiet 6600GT. mine is the reference cooling design, so i'm guessing one that uses a custom design would be better. THANKS!

    peace

I put an Apollo 6600GT in a box I sold recently, and it was pretty loud too.

I put an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer HSF unit on my own 6800 - it's huge, but it does a great job of cooling and is pretty quiet. You might see if you could put one of those on it.

My Gigabyte is pretty quiet, or at least it's quiet enough that I can't hear it over my 3 shitty case fans and my NB fan. It cools fairly well too.

Only problem I've had with is every once in a while the fan goes all crazy and makes a big humming noise. Not sure what's wrong with it since it happens randomly and usually starts at bootup. Most of the time a reboot will fix it, but for the times that that doesn't work, I gotta take it out of the slot and put it back in. For some reason that always fixes the problem, so I'm clueless as to what the hell is causing the fan to make that noise.

Hmmm...my eVGA 6600GT is not loud at all, certainly not any louder than the POS 5200u I had before. Maybe you got a bad fan.

yeah bud your fan is crappin out, it' buzzin because it vibrates on the spindle. It goes away and comes back at times becasue it'll catch its rated rpm usualy when it warms up. Better get that replaced because even though its working its not actually spinning at its rated rpm; therefor, the gpu reaches higher heat levels than usual.

kits are cheap but warranty will cover it

I just built another box with a eVGA 6600GT, and that mother is kinda loud - I think it's louder than the Apollo unit I used earlier. If it was my personal machine, I might be looking for an aftermarket cooler for it, like the NV Silencer I have on my 6800.
