    Computer Went Pop Now Wont Turn On

    So i get into work yesterday and the one girl said the computer went pop and shut off and now it wont turn back on. So i plugged it in and nothing. I have tried unplugging the hard drive, taking out the ram, taking out the video card, i took out the processer which is a P4 and put it back in and that didnt work. I tried a different powersupply and nothing either. I smell no burnt smells either. Wires look and i unplugged them and replugged them in. Im assuming its the board but i want to know what you guys think.

    If it made a popping sound it's probably the PSU. Do you have another one around you can test it with?

    So P/S wouldn't be the answer. Of course the next question is, does the original P/S work in another computer? But maybe a faulty P/S could ruin another Mo/Bo so maybe you shouldn't try it. I'd do a visual inspection of all components to see if there are any burnt spots, and or transisters that look like they popped.

    Ouch, I got pwn3d on that.

    Yes, give the original PSU a try since I'm not sure what else can make a popping sound in a PC. An exploding capacitor on the motherboard maybe.

    Might as well try since the motherboard is trashed as is.

    why not get experience on already broken crap - so you have that for when you really wanna modify for customization

    I just fixed an older, somewhat broken, DVDROM drive (the tray assembly was all eskew and wasn't working at all, and it made an awful grinding noise at every system Boot) b/c I opened it up and was daring

    Something made it go BOOM the first time. You don't get a waranty with a quick fix, just a little more time.

    Yeah, the capacitor or the solder job was faulty. It is possible that other caps will blow and that his attempt at repair will fail, but I don't see why that changes anything.

    nothing changes;
    you replace the mobo if critical - then before stomping on it - you try your handyman talents on it
