Angry GASP! What is this new thing in the "My Documents" folder?

I was looking in the "My Documents" folder and I found a new folder that I KNOW I did not create.

The folder is titled "My Data Sources" and it contains 3 files -
    1) +Connect to New Data Source.odc
    2) +SQL New Server Connection.odc
    3) DATACONN.HTC

What the hell is this? I searched for some info on the net, but turned up nothing tangible. Could someone possibly be hacking into my computer?????

Pretty sure I've seen this non-destructive folder. Many apps know a days create these type of folders.

Mail Merge is the only thing that turned up on my search for a My Data Sources folder.

    What did you install recently?

My Data Sources sounds fine. Me - I have to go to control panel, then Administrative tools, then Data Sources to get to the Data Source Administrator.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

I noticed the + sign - could that be connected to ASP+ and perhaps even .NET framework ?

This thing has got to go.

I actually did do some mail merges in Word recently trying to learn how to use that feature. I didn't think that Microsoft installs anything in the My Documents folder. Do you think that could be the culprit? Should I leave it? Is it ok to delete it?

gzunk: I did do the same thing you advised. That is, I went to the control panel > performance and maintence > Administrative tools > then Data Sources to get to the Data Source Administrator.... I couldn't locate that "My Data Sources" folder or any of its associated files. WEIRD huh?! What's that mean?

I am running WinXP on a home network attached to a router. Currently, I have security settings on via the router. Thanks for the help guys.

Just make it invisible and ignore it (unless you actually intend to use it). That's my solution for these kinds of things, anyway. Don't like My Documents to get cluttered...

The normal Data Sources control panel thing doesn't have anything to do with My Data Sources. It's the Mail Merge. If you're not doing any more (or you haven't figured out how to use it), just delete the folder.

That's pretty rude. Creating folders in My Documents is one thing, and writing log files to c:\ another. But creating stuff on the desktop? That is just plain rude.

I'd rather have an APP be upfront - and show me what it otherwise would bury deep within the DIR tree somewhere on the HDD.

(like Javacrud does - where a logfile will be created and stored at some absurd depth and in an obscured location - ala
    Code:

    C:\Documents and Settings\%Userprofile\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\log
    and Get a load of this TMP directory;
    C:\Documents and Settings\%Userprofile\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\tmp
The path and location to most every LOG file I've ever seen, can easily be altered - IOW, stored wherever you tell it, and most times tell it not to even create a log

I actually like the user\Application Data placement. It's where you can find what you're looking for, but a novice user who has no need to be in the cache or log directory at all isn't going to run across it while poking around the file system.

I have te same folder, containing the datasources I set up from Excel to our SQL Server.
It's standard, nothing to worry about.

    Hi BaCardi,

I Know it has been 15 years since you posted this, but if you are still alive I want to confirm what some of the others have said about mail merge.

The "My Data Sources" folder appears in documents whenever I import a list from Excel in word, which I do whenever I am making labels from mail merge. You can finally rest easy.
