Interesting though? last I heard MS were touting 3.12Gb not 4.0. Reminds me of their 9x/ME days when you were supposed to be able to use 2Gb of physical memory...........but God help you if you installed more than 512Mb

And nobody mentioned that your video card is included? In 2009 a 1Gb vid card is not unusual?

You are confusing usable with supported. Windows 32-bit et. al. supports up to 4GB of RAM. However the user will only be privy to roughly 3.0-3.25GB of that, due to OS overhead and memory mapping.

    Crusader for the 64-bit Era.
New Rule: 2GB per core, minimum.

Lol at the response to a 4 year old topic. Technically for XP/Vista (server OS is different) its 4GB minus other allocatable memory. So if you have 1.5GB of Video ram you only see 2.5GB in windows.

What about using 4 gigs total on an Asus board -- using winXP Pro x64. Currently I'm using two 1GB cards on the two of my four slots. Does it make sense to buy another 1GB card or 2 of them, to make a difference for 3D rendering etc?
Thanks (BTW I'm using maya 8.5 & Mental Ray)

XP no matter what version will only support 4GB total system memory (including any memory on graphics), so it really depends on your graphics card?

If your system has no dedicated graphics and uses onboard graphics, then have 4GB and you'll probably see 3.75GB (ish). If you have a 1GB (or close) graphics card, then just purchase an extra 1GB only.
