Is there a virus/malware that puts duplicate files on your desktop?

I just finished reconnecting a friends computer to the net...again. I'm always hearing how the computer suck and how they are always having problems with it. I can never figure out how they manage to screw it up but they do. I once again forget how bad the average computer user is. Of course, there is always some random person using it so I guess I should not be surprised. Anyway, during the process of cleaning it up I noticed that there are multiple copies of a bunch of files and shortcuts on the desktop. One or two could be random but there were a couple dozen duplicate files. I am not sure how they managed that. I was wondering if there was some malware involved. I installed AVG for them and I'm scanning it now with spybot. Anyone heard of such a thing?

One or two bits of malware do things a bit like that ....

To me, it sounds much more likely, they highlighted and dragged to create duplicates by accident while eating fried chicken with one hand, searching for porn with the other ....

    +1

It very easy to do it by accident and not even to notice.

I scanned it and didn't come up with anything. Of course, I have fixed this computer several times. I am tired of hearing how the PC sucks though. The PC is fine, the problem is PC operators who don't know what they are doing.
