    BFG 7900GS unlocks!

I came across this from techpowerup:

    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=18473

and using Rivatuner, I was able to get my new BFG 7900GS OC to unlock from 20 pp/7vp to 24pp/8vp.

From a locked o/c speed of 585/1600 to an unlocked o/c speed of 570/1600 (couldn't go higher with the unlock) I got:

    500 more 3DMark03 points
    300 more 3DMark05 points
    200 more 3DMark06 points
96.5 fps vs. 89.9 fps Half Life 2 Lost Coast Video Stress Test

I'm still testing, but I basically got a faster than 7900GT card for $187.99 CAD after rebate with taxes.

From what I read at Techpowerup, it's only the BFG ones that can unlock so far.

This keeps getting better....I did the volt mod to 1.5V using rear window defroster kit and I'm up to 650/1650--faster than a 7900GTO, 7950GT, and 7900GTX for $160 CAD ($139 USD).

The GPU volt mod wasn't hard to do. I used a paper clip to apply the rear window defroster kit liquid.
I am by no means electronically/electrically inclined.

Even if you make a mistake, you can always use acetone to remove it. Just ensure that the correct point(s) is/are connected before powering on.

I used this as a guide:

    http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...readid=1847758

    (I didn't do the memory vmod as I don't have a multimeter.)

Damn!!! And I just spent $230 or so for a 7900GTO lol.

Edit: Never mind, the BFG 7900GS is $184 at Newegg, plus my GTO has the nice GTX cooler.

Did you get it at Canada Computers? I've been looking for something around the $200 range to replace a X800XT PE. Saw the X1950 Pro for $200 on the Futureshop Boxing Day flyer.

Yes, I got it from Canada Computers.

That X1950Pro @$199.99 looks like a good deal also.

You get the lifetime warranty with the BFG, though.

I just removed the heatsink to re-apply thermal compound and found the core is a 7900GT one, not a 7900GS! It looks like BFG is just soft blocking the pipes via BIOS.

    Awesome !

I love bios unlocks, there is always the anticipation that you saved a busload of cash as you boot up that game for the first time.
