Hitachi HD's...what say ye?
Yeah, I know "IBM Deathstar" and all that crap. But some of the Hitachi Deskstar's look good and pretty fast for PATA 133. I like the large-capacity platter idea.

Any experiences here with these? I'm not looking for the usual "I only buy x-brand HD's - they're the best", because I've used them all before except Samsung and Hitachi. Just opinions on the Hitachi's if you've used them please.

I haven't used any Hitachi, but I thought all that Deathstar business was in the past. I wouldn't be against picking one up.

I have a Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm drives in 2 of my notebooks. So far they have bested the nominal failure rate of any other notebook drive I've owned. IIRC the record is near 90 days before failure. I believe the longevity is because a) the SATA interface rather than IDE, b) it is winter and ambient temps are 15°F cooler than the summer and c) the Core2 Duo runs cooler than the Pentium Mobile. I have not gotten any new burn marks on my legs with the C2D notebooks.
I'm happy with the Fujitsu products so far. We'll see come summer.

That's what I was hoping too, that the problems were worked out and they've had good reliability since those days.

I used to own a laptop with a Hitachi 2.5" 7k60 (7200rpm 60GB) drive in it. The thing was a fast, screaming beast of a laptop HD, but it failed on me twice.
In the laptop arena, I'd still go with a Hitachi 7200rpm drive, because to me, speed > reliability (for non-crit data)
In the desktop world, I'd go with Western Digital. IBM's, Seagates, MAxtors have all failed on me in my experience at some point, but WD never has. And besides, they make the WD Raptor (for non-critical data, speed > reliability).

Hitachi sucks! I've had two cars that have had hitachi alternators. Both went dead. My Replacement alternator was also a dud. The carbs they made for my car are also lame. Now my car has been converted to use a gm alternator and uses weber carbs w00tacious!
Now, their hard drives. Can't really comment much on that since I'll never voluntarily buy anything from them.

That's a great story too.

Interesting story... But poor quality of one product line from a company doesn't always translate to poor quality across all product lines.
Case in point... I refuse to buy Sony. Their DVD players are shiite, their camcorders are shiite, I don't like their attempts to push proprietary formats on me, I don't like their use of DRM, I don't like rootkits, the Sony laptop I used to own had to have its motherboard replaced twice. However, Sony displays are the absolute best in the consumer market, and have been since the days of Trinitron CRTs. So when I go shopping for LCD monitors, LCD TVs, or even laptops, I'll continue to go back to Sony.

I'm using a WD now and it's had no problems. At the same time, I've had Seagates, Maxtors, IBMs, and Quantums and never lost one.
But for the money and size, I like the apparent speed of the Hitachis. Just looking for opinions on them.
You're right that you can't judge all products from a company based on a few very good or very lousy models. As far as TV's, I've owned Sony's for the past 15+ years, but I'm not crazy about many of their other products.

Hitachi announced a $399 terrabyte drive will be out soon.

I have several Hitachi drives. So far they are very fast and reliable. The only gripe I have is that they are louder than my Seagates and Maxtors. I only have 120GB SATA drives from them, so I cannot comment on any other models.

A TB of storage I'd never fill up in a million years, but it to see it happening.
PCJ, I'm not worried about a few dB's more of HD noise. Hell, when I'm on the PC I usually have Radio Paradise streaming through JBL 4412 Studio Monitors anyway, so who can hear a HD run?
