phenom
what are you peoples thoughts on phenom? The early models still are not what you would expect (slow) but as clock speeds ramp I expect more! There appear to be some AM2 issues also. Luckily The system I am thinking about is an Asus MB so the Bios flash works (according to Tom Pabst).
edit and it is cheap

I haven't kept up with AMD but I can't see a reason to get one unless you really want the unlocked multiplier. The C2D are still superior.

I'm thinking about making an AMD/ATI folding build in a little while, once I reacquire a source of income. Then I'll probably pick up a Phenom. My intel rig is mostly for gaming.

the phenom entry is piss weak, seriously...its not stable overlocking past 125%
but the middle and higher lines are great, i would still say a c2d would give it a good run and forget those c2e they still has better power saving per power produced penny wise...
i hate amd atm ... but i still bought 2 x phenoms LOL

I did position this question, as to value. But I do have another question, that is can you control what the different cores are doing? Say core 3 folds, core 1 is primary that sort of thing?

Yes, but it's really not worth your time. I run the SMP client on the Athlon X2 rig I'm currently using and never turn it off. I'm sure it costs me a few frames per second, but it does a pretty good job of using the resources available and not interfering with the programs I'm running.

A "catchy" name like phenom just won't cut it against the Intel Q6600. The price is within $40 and the Intel seems to own it. The Black box AMD 9600 appears to be flaky on overclocks while the Intel Q6600 is very easily OC. Hard to recommend AMD at this point to any new builder. Sad but true.

well I am not a gamer and I personally object to !ntels practices. So I do not buy their (INTC) stuff anymore. The last !ntel I built was an 800 MHZ thing with that big cartrigde to hold the proccesor. I do own a 386SX-16MHZ and celery 366 though, I think they both still work..
