    Need opinions on what OS to game with ...

    Too many versions of windows these days .... XP (32 & 64 bit), vista premium/basic/ultimate (32 & 64bit) .

    I was leaning towards Vista home premium 64 bit so I have DX10 handy. I need it to play my old games too, will I run into problems? Are drivers solid on the 64bit version (ati) ?

    Any thoughts / opinions are appreciated

    Your best bet:

    Run a duel boot with XP and Vista.
    If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

    Dual boots are a hassle to play with, 2 OSs that you have to keep updated and constantly restarting to boot between them.

    Just go with Vista. Youll be fine with Home Premium 64 but you could bump up to Ultimate if you wanna spend the extra dough.

    Ive never had a problem playing any game on Vista, even older ones.

    I dunno how ATIs Vista drivers are since I use nVidia, but Ive never had any problems with nVidias Vista drivers so I doubt youll have anything bad with ATIs.

    Of course if you already have XP and would have to buy Vista, you might as well stay with XP.

    I only have ~ $100 in my new build budget for an OS so buying xp and vista is out of the question. Plus im going to be dual booting linux with my future choice of windows so adding a 3rd would be way too much of a hassle.

    Premium is your best bang for buck. I have Vista Ultimate x64, and the extra amount it costs for the "extra Ultimate features" are so much NOT worth it (at least to me). Regretted it ever since, uggg.

    The site has both Canada and U.S. parts. It's $17 dollars above your budget, and it's a 64-Bit version of Premium. I don't know how much that will compare to the weaker US dollar, but either way, it's worth the extra 20ish bucks.

    I vote XP (if you already own it). If you HAVE to buy, I suppose you should go with Vista for future proofing but let it be said that I hate that OS. I'm staying with XP for awhile.

    Actually, I've been using it exclusively for gaming since release.

    Its worked flawlessly with all but maybe 3 of the 65+ games I've installed on it (and those games that didn't run well are notoriously under-patched).

    I'm not the kind anymore to analyze benchmarks and FPS counters in XP and cross examine them against Vista, but from my "eye benchmarks", there's no noticeable performance difference.

    On the other hand, I wouldn't bother upgrading from XP solely for gaming if you already have XP, but Vista is equally capable in gaming.

    I'm toying with making a new comp in the next couple of months, and I'm probably going with XP Home to save some cash, unless anyone can give me a good reason to go with Pro. I'm not really sure of all the differences, to be honest. I've been running Pro for forever, but that's on an old university license that I need to replace.

    if you already have xp then just do that...but if you have to buy something I'd go with vista

    Another vote for Vista x64 for future reasons.

    As for gaming, I have no issues with all but my oldest games (Old DOS D&D games) running on Vista. (And those I'm currently fiddling with in DOSBox.)

    The only advantage of Ultimate over Home Premium? Upon release of the new TV pack (Codename: Fiji), Ultimate will support 4 tuners of each kind, Home Premium will still be limited to 2.

    Crusader for the 64-bit Era.
    New Rule: 2GB per core, minimum.

    Besides, Vista Ultimate is harmful to your eyes.
