Well, I have a pretty stout computer but I hate overhead so that's not a good option.

I was going to get a 3ware card and stick 1gig of memory on it though.

That's what's nice about RAID10. You can just use Intel onboard RAID with it. Using the onboard RAID sucks for any RAID type that involves parity calculations such as 5 or 6. RAID10 may lose 50% of the drives, but it's very reliable and very fast. And since it has no parity calculations, it's fast even with simple onboard controllers.

...and huge loss of drives but at least, these days they are cheap.

Exactly. You can get 4 1TB drives for under $400. That's less than the cost of a controller alone. So if you have onboard RAID, $400 gives you a super fast, super reliable 2TB array. That's really not bad at all.

    Agreed.

I tried onboard RAID for RAID5, and let me tell you... OMG did it blow chunks! Onboard is mainly for RAID 0,1 and 10.

The Infrant NV+ is a decent NAS box. It wont win any performance crowns, but its a decent box and now you can get an empty NV+ for under $500. I think I paid $600 for it over 2 years ago. Probably closer to 3.

Yeah, paid around 2 grand for mine with 500 gig drives but that was 2 years ago too and I think I got the external warranty with it which by the way blows as you don't get any SUPPORT with it. Just hardware warranty.

    So, you're saying that if I want raid 10 I don't need a card?

I probably still will because I want more drives and the board ain't gonna hold'em all

Ah, ok. I have no problem with being a catfish but I look more like a fat guppy, that's why I wanted to change..
