Windows 7 Release Copy upgrade
I've been running the Windows 7 ultimate release copy on my laptop for the past few months and now it is expiring and it's now time to spring for the latest version, but I'm trying to be sure that I understand this correctly. My laptop was running Vista Home Basic and I didn't get a copy of the OS with the computer. When I loaded the W7RC OS I didn't really think this through and I kinda assumed that I would just be able to buy an upgrade version of W7, but, from what I now understand, that is not the case and I may need to buy a full version in order to keep the computer from shutting down every 2 hours. Is this correct?

Yup, AFAIK you can't really buy an upgrade version from RC. Since your computer apparently didn't come with anything beyond the installed Vista Home Basic you'll probably need to buy a full version.
Newegg has Win 7 Pro around $140 and has other versions a little cheaper.

I hadn't thought of checking with Newegg--I'll give that a look and buy into the scam that is an OS upgrade.

I was able to upgrade from Win 7 RC to Win 7 Business without a previous OS.
-
Never tried to upgrade from the RC, but today I saw someone on OCWorkbench described an upgrade path for all RC or beta versions.

went thru the same issue on 3 computers which really sucked as the os was a mature install about 9 months and fully set up.
i had purchased 2 home basic upgrades.
i was able to do a clean install ,skip the registration entry screen, andafter install was finished the win registration was accepted with no issues.
if you need to back up your system you can get a trial of acronis home 2010
which will work for 1 month for free.
after you install win7 you have to download another trial of acronis to complete
the backup.win 7 can be installed on more than one computer illeagaly but you will have to reg via phone.......hope this helped and microsoft was really fu for doing this beta like this

I always what to have full version rather than upgrade...
anyways, how much is the price difference from full vs upgrade for windows 7? any idea? thanks.
-
The only difference between the Windows 7 upgrade and the full version is the license.
The software is exactly the same. The OEM version is the oddball.

Just do a clean install. Unless things have changed since the initial release of the final version, it should work even with the upgrade version.

That's the rub.
The RC was designed to allow an upgrade. Microsoft clearly stated that those who started experiencing periodic shutdowns would have to UPGRADE to a live version.
The beta did not allow an upgrade. Those on the RC will be fine, beta users will have to reformat.

I used the cversion.ini modification on my test box for upgrading from the first beta release through the RC to the retail release without any problems. I did a clean install on my production systems.
I've never reformatted a volume even when doing a clean install. There is no point to doing so.

Take into consideration that even if you use the cversion "trick" you have to upgrade to the Ultimate version.
I tried it too on a test computer. It works but the result are not as fast and stable as a clean install.

Fast I'll buy, but I haven't had any stability problems on Win 7 upgrades, from RC1 or Vista.

Since it is an in-place upgrade to a beta/rc version of an OS, it might depend on what is actually installed and configured.
