I started up a new post-update single player world yesterday. Found a skeleton in a little dark spot not far from my door after the first night, which I managed to take out (the sun did some of the work once I lured him out far enough) although I did lose most of my health. Then I went and farmed some pigs for ham, and I was on my way back to base to stick them in the furnace for better health gain, and of course I died (had 1/2 heart left) jumping down about 3 blocks.
Stupid multiplayer and it's no-penalty-for-jumping.

Fire traps work the best, imo. Put some around your house instead of the moat and the mobs run into it and die.
If you don't want mobs coming up from mines into your house, get rid of the stairs and put a ladder going all the way down from house to mines.
Now that I've been down to the Nether a bit I think I'm just going to make a solid wall of Netherstone and light it on fire to make a border around my place.

That is the most boring thing I've ever heard.
I like a basic trench because it doesn't require any crafting like a fence does (though I know even that's not all that much), and if I actually need some monster items I can go kill them off to harvest them. I also prefer a huge wall of fire because it's a huge wall of fire.
Also, notch mentioned the below on Twitter I think, I can't actually access that site right now -

I still like the massive spawn amounts above ground, but I agree that I could easily do without the mobs spawning in my mine if there's not enough light (though as I mentioned above I only had it happen once). One problem I've discovered with the mobs spawning so numerously above ground, though - since the watch doesn't work in the Nether, if you build a new portal down there you'll never know if you're about to come back up to the overworld in the middle of a death trap. It would be wise to make a chest in the Nether before you head up if you planned on bringing back anything valuable.

I don't roll on Shabbos!
Hmmm I think the world generator is a little messed up now. I just created a new game and have floating land right next to my spawn point:
Also, I REALLY think he needs to add some variables options in for players to choose. A slider for day/night length, monster density, and preferred biome would be really nice (I want my days longer!!!)

Has got that jut
Logged in on a different computer, so I didn't have access to my SP stuff. Did find a biome on the MP server, though. First I just saw this awesome mountain which I have claimed as my own -
The other side -
From the top, in the next direction I'll be heading -
Also, FYI, snow no longer replenishes itself like it did in worlds that had snow before the biome update (since there is no more snowfall). If anybody else finds my new spot I'd appreciate it if they did NOT screw with any of the snowy areas, ie no digging on snow covered dirt or farming snow covered trees.
::edit::
Don't know why that last one saved funny, but I'm too lazy to fix it now.
::edit 2::
Man, The Nether is just way too much of a hassle. Can't go anywhere without the ghasts screwing with you, and while the zombie pigmen start out peaceful as soon as the exploding fireballs from the Ghasts set them on fire they're all after you in a second. The caves are so huge I can barely move in any direction without dropping 30 squares into lava, and that's if I can even get around the ghasts in the first place.
Peaceful is the way to go if you're heading into the Nether.

Awesome.
Snow not falling is actually a known issue which should be fixed at some point.

Great White Shark
So I just logged in and got the updates... I noticed my old worlds still had torches all over the place so I suppose they are still under the old rules?

Is the server down? I'm not able to log in, but I also just installed a new texture pack so I don't know if that's the problem.
::edit::
Went back to original textures and it loaded just fine.
