Minecraft, awesome one man game project

My son bought an indie game on XBLA that is similar to this. It is called fortress craft. He's been at it most of the holiday weekend.

Just logged in and some asshole screwed up my building. *** is it with people that just have to go and ruin other people's creations?

I got worried, so I logged back in. Sure enough, somebody has jacked up my Falls building. The stairwell at the bottom is flooded with lava; a door has been hacked into the middle of the wall, and the top of it is just all jacked up after somebody cut through the dirt and flooded it.

Haven't been out to Four Pillars yet since the way is flooded with lava, but from the map it looks like somebody dug out the sand under one corner so I'm assuming that stairwell is flooded as well.

You know, I thought this sounded a bit odd when I first read it a while back.

That sucks. I know we're not on much anymore but there's always got to be some douche that has to screw something up. Can we password protect the next server?

To be fair, jpacke built pretty much everything directly above your lava falls on the map (http://darksavior.net/~minecraft/index.html). He probably has invested as much or more time than any of us in that world, so I doubt it was him.

As for me, my entire building near the spawn point is just gone altogether (although, it was made of wood), as is the original spawn house (also was made of wood). The stairs beneath the columns buildings had lava poured down them, too. That was all I saw before I gave up in frustration (I only logged in for about 5 mins after not having played for a month or two) and checked the map for other damage (when I saw the lava poured on the sharky building, snow dome, etc).

James: can you look at the world/players/* files and see if anyone new has logged in lately (last month or two)?

Sure.

For what it's worth, the server isn't public, and it isn't on a standard port. Meaning the only way people should find it is word of mouth from other sharks, or searching this forum, etc. (And yes, I know this forum is searchable via Google.) Just blows my mind someone would take the time to find our server and then **** all over it.

Shouldn't be a surprise. That's what trolls do. Can you limit access to approved login names?

Yes, you can set up access to names on a whitelist only.

Looks like a whitelist only is the way to go. Are you going to keep this server or wipe it for the adventure update?

I figure, if new content is being added, then the best bet is to wipe so the new stuff gets pre-generated at the "start" of the world instance.

Added known users (including Zatanna) to the white-list, enabled it, and restarted the server. I've also got (finally) automated backups of the world running once a night.

I should have really passed off admin duties to someone with more time. >.>

As much as I hate to say it since I spent so much time on the current map...a fresh new world for 1.8* is probably a good idea.

I had actually "changed" it pretty much immediately but I didn't submit the changes until after I logged back in to Minecraft and wandered a bit, looked at the map, etc. Clarified a few things before I actually submitted it; for example, the room I thought they had newly built in The Falls, cutting through my staircase, was actually my main room; they had burrowed through the wall and then changed enough in there that I actually thought it was someplace completely different.
