Question Ports not available to app

I am getting a very slow internet connection. A box appeared reporting that an app could not find a port to listen on. Is there a problem with the ports? How can I make sure enough ports are available or open ports?

Do you have more than one application running that is configured to use the same port?
Use the portmon tool from Microsoft to see port activity.

    Network ports, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb897437.aspx

You have to be more specific otherwise it just a "Guessing game".

Ports have to be forwarded toward the specific computer's IP.

A specific port can only be forwarded toward one computer.

If you have similar application on more than one computer the application's port has to be changed to be unique on each computer.

It has to be forward in the Router, and also be allowed through the software Firewall.

The instructions depends on the specific Router that you have (the manual might be
helpful) and the specific software Firewall that you use (the software help might include the instructions).

This site is the champion of port forwarding,

Can you explain IP addresses a bit? For example network connections shows one IP address for my connection.. What does the IP address have to do with ports? I can add IP addresses in the advanced tab.

There is a difference between private IP addresses on your LAN and the public IP address used to access the internet.
A port is associated with a specific IP address.
For example a web server responds to port 80, but only for a specific IP address.
A browser will insert a port number that matches the specified protocol.
There are several but the most common are ftp, https and the default http.
Sharky Forums is accessed on public IP 63.146.109.206 port 80, usually noted as 63.146.109.206:80.
Your router can forward traffic from the public IP and port number to a single private IP and port number you designate.
Some home routers only allow for forwarding to a private IP without changing the port.

I removed a netsky or brotsky virus and that is when I saw the port inaccessible error and very slow connections.. Could the virus have affected something?
