Finally I am starting to get a decent system built! What else should I do?

Ok I started out with this build from about three years ago:

    Sempron X2 2200+
    Asrock N68-S
    1GB (512MBx2) Kingston PC2-6400
    320GB Hitachi IDE Hard Drive
    Integrated Geforce 7025

About six months ago bought off eBay and upgraded to:

    Athlon 64 x2 5600+
    2GB (1GBx2) G. Skill PC2-6400
500GB WD Blue Caviar SATA 3.0 Hard Drive
    PNY Geforce 9800 GTX+ 512MB

Wow was this an upgrade! World of Warcraft ... MAXED. Modern Warfare 3 ... MAXED. Everquest II ... one notch above BALANCED. Dead Island ... MAXED. Skyrim ... MEDIUM.

Currently I am winning on eBay:

    4GB (2GBx2) G. Skill PC2-6400 (replaces the 2GB as I only have two slots)
    Athlon II X4 640 3GHz

How am I doing? Anything you can recommend?

One thing I was wondering, if I use a dedicated sound card would I get better frame rates. I only have one available PCI slot as my video card covers up one of the two slots the board has. I do have a firewire card in the other PCI slot as I edit video, I would lose this if I went with a dedicated sound card so that is why I am wondering how important they are in gaming now.

Any reason why you buy computer parts on ebay? Are you buying used or something?

Also, the 5600+ you have is socket AM2, but the 640 is AM3, so you will need a new board. However, the 640 is a tired CPU. Llano just came out and is around the same price. Since you need to upgrade your motherboard anyway, I would go with the Llano line if you are looking to save some money. Either that or go AM3 and get a Phenom series like a 950 or 955.

As for sound, onboard sound takes a very slight amount of performance hit (like .5%-1%.) It is hardly worth it to upgrade to dedicated sound unless you need optical out or something.

I agree I would go with a 3.2-3.4 ghz Phenom II. They are pretty cheap now that they are getting phased out. They are still a good gaming CPU and will do a lot better than the others in video editing.

Ok I have my new rig up and running! So far it is FAST!!! What do you think? Check out my signature for full specs. Everything was purchased from Newegg except the hard drive which I did get on eBay because of the high cost new.
