Hmmm, this seems like a bad direction to go in. Having a closed system and known specifications is what makes consoles so easy to play and to develop for. Splitting the install base by making hardware revisions or upgrades available to the consumer is pretty much stepping outside of what makes consoles such a worry-free experience for the mainstream consumer.
I highly doubt the 720 will be able to be opened by the user, which is needed to do any sort of upgrade that is meaningful.

I would not mind having a machine you can upgrade, but only the HDD...
If you can upgrade the CPU, memory, or GPU you can easily anger the user by having to upgrade the machine to play the game.

The Xbox has always been essentially a PC that has been idiot proofed. I still don't know why you don't just use a real PC.
the reason i own any console is simple: exclusive titles... until we see games like uncharted, halo, gt5, forza, gears of war, god of war, ico, journey, mario, smash brothers (and not mention the exclusives for PSN and XBL)... there will always be a market for consoles
