New game is Guild Wars 2. Currently I have been able to play pretty well with setting on high however I have an older 20 inch lcd monitor so my res is lower. I have it maxed but only goes so high (forget what it is off hand)
I would like to maybe upgrade the monitor to a 24 or 27 inch screen and maybe bump up the card. However my budget isn't very high. 500 bucks max. I guess I"m wondering since my current card seems to play pretty well is if I did upgrade my monitor and played at a much higher res would I loose a lot of FPS? Is there a card worth upgrading from a gtx480 that can be had for 200 bucks?
I am looking at ASUS VE278Q 27 as a monitor. I am thinking I would be ok just getting a new monitor and wating a bit for a video card upgrade.
What is your budget? That comes into play. I would recommend getting a good priced 1080P (not 1080i) TV. I got a Westinghouse 32" 1080P TV for 260 on amazon and love it as my monitor. It uses an HDMI cable tho. I upgraded from a GTX260 to a GTX570 and it does more than enough for me. I run everything at 1600x1080

Well I think for my desk and area 27 inch will be about as big as I want to go. Coming from an old dell 20 inch I think it will be a lot bigger then what i'm use to.
Here are a few I was looking at. What do you guy's think? Budget is the cheapsest I can find but no more then the 300 or so.
a gtx480 is more than enough for 1920x1080 res.... and the monitors you linked to are all the same res so it wont make a difference to upgrade your vid card IMHO... you would need to get one of the 2560x1440 (27") monitors to need a reason to upgrade and at that point i would be looking at the geforce 670 or radeon 7950
yeah you could probably use an upgrade from a gtx460 for playing modern games at 1080p (same as me)... i like my gtx660 that i got for $205 but you can get something like a 660ti thats a bit more future proof (wasnt worth the extra $100 to me)
radeon 7870, radeon 7950, geforce gtx 660, gtx 660 ti all great choices in the $200-300 range
also, all three of those monitors are TN based so terrible IMHO.. i would go with the planar since its the cheapest and it looks like all three use the same low end TN panel and cheap stand so go with the cheapest
Thanks for you input kpxgg. Been back to thinking about a video card upgrade. I like to play games but as I get older my game playing get's less. But it's still fun passtime for me when I do get the opportunity. 200 bucks for me is about my limit when I look at video cards. I think if I do upgrade the card I'll probably go with the gtx660 as you did. I bet for me I'll see a big improvement. I still would like to get a larger monitor though. Even though those I linked are a bit on the lowend I can't really afford much more. Unless you had a suggestion as far as a good 27inch monitor goes?
if you are set on a 27" monitor i would take a look at the "catleap 27" korean monitors... they use the same panel used in the apple 27" cinema display and dell 27" ultrasharp which cost over $700. you are playing a bit of a lottery since there is no dead pixel guarantee and no international warranty but most people who it seem to be pleased for the price. i know i would personally have a couple of dead pixels on a superior IPS panel over a cheaper TN panel which has issues regarding color accuracy, backlight bleeding, and poor viewing angles. if interested just search for "catleap 27" on ebay
at $200 limit for your vid card, its down to either the radeon 7870 or geforce 660
