I bought a notebook as a replacement to my destop pc and admit it is pretty slow eventhough specs are better. My notebook is a Asus from the R500V serie with a core i7 @ 2.3 cpu, 4 GB ram and a 5200 rpm hdd running w7 premium x64.
I'm trying to understand what is causing the slow down. The parts are for mobile use so I can't really upgrade anything else than the hdd.

Does anyone know what I can do to improve general performances?
From a hardware perspective, the harddrive isn't that great (7200rpm would help, but preferably get an SSD). From a osftware perspective, if you are using the pre-packaged Windows install, there could be tons of cruft on there slowing it down.
The desktop is an amd x555 @ 3.2 gh 4gb ram and w7 64bits
I am interested in a ssd and like you said there a lot of installed things I don't want. Drive c: has 49Gb without I adding anything to it.
I will try uninstalling as much as possible but I face the risk deleting necessary files.
My desktop has an AMD HD 5600 gpu wheras the laptop has a small geforce 610M.
The hard drive on the desktop is a 7200 rpm compared to a 5200 rpm 2.5" drive on the laptop.
I was looking forward to play the new sim city one day on the laptop but I have considered selling
it back for one with better graphic performance.
If I remember correctly, everything but the 670M and 680M parts are rebadged last generation parts.
More than likely, the hdd will be (as everyone has already mentioned) your primary bottleneck. Remove it with an SSD, and your next major bottleneck will be your GPU.

On the subject of hdd, how does a 7200rpm 2.5" drive compare in performance to a 3.5" drive of the same speed?

A laptop drive is slower than a desktop drive. Desktop drives have large platters and, usually higher bit density than laptop drives. 2 things that contribute to faster hard-drives. Laptop drives aren't tuned for performane, this is another thing that contributes to lower performance.
I you want desktop drive performance without sacrificing space, go for an hybrid drive, such as the Seage momentus XT. These drives are cheaper than ssd's, but will give you better performance than desktop drives.
As for games, the video card will be your bottleneck, not the hard-drive.
