    Socket LGA 775

I have an ASUS P5WD2 premium board and I am planning to run it with a dual core Pentium 945.
Basically this is uncharted territory for me(Intel)and need to know if I am going to need a back plate on the board's back, to mount a stock Intel cooler

The back plate is the plate that covers the back where the USB ports etc plug in and has nothing to do with the cpu cooler. It is recommended that you always use a back plate.

Haven't been around lately, and you've probably already solved it, but here goes:

Stock intel coolers for the last 7 years or so are just push-pin style affairs. They have little plastic locks that go through the 4-holes in the motherboard around the CPU socket. When you are ready to remove the cooler, you rotate the top of the plastic push pin 90 degrees, and then pull up and it comes right out. It might not be the absolute end-all-be-all for cooling, but it's easy, reliable, and repeatable, which is good for mass market solutions.
