Since I've been out of the loop for a few years now, could you guys tell me what the differences are between this N/draft technology, and the final one that's supposed to be finished this year?

I heard this isn't the true N or something...

Until the standards are finalized, no one knows what the differences will be. Currently manufacturers are marketing hardware that usually works only with their own products. The assumption is that when a final standard is issued, a firmware update with fix any compatibility issues. That is a very poor assumption.

A lot of manufacturers are now coming out with "Draft-N" instead of "Pre-N". Most boast 12-14x the speed of G, 4-10x the range of G. The new draft N stuff is pretty pricey though but looks pretty cool, like a damn radar station. The Linksys Desktop Draft N card comes with an antenna you have to plug in that is connected by 3 wires that look to be the thickness of a Cable TV plug. The antenna is pretty big too around 6-8" tall.
