Post Need help setting up cable network btwn 4 comps for gaming

Hmm well I've done it with 3 computers + hub + a internetconnect sharing program.. but this year I have enough for 4 computers to be networked now...

Does anyone have any websites that have tutorials on how you set up a 4 way network? (Use one computer as the server computer and distribute the connetion to the other computers)

I really do not want to use an internetsharing program this time, and would like to hear of an alternate, more 'advanced' solution...

    thanks

WinME and win2K have internet sharing built in.
For Win 98 you can use "sygate" by sybergen. (crack is availableon astalavista.box.sk )

Hrmm if I decide to use WinME or Win2000, do all the client computers have to have WinME or 2000?
Or can I just have the server comp use WinME/2000 and have it split the connection with the other comps?

It would actually be more efficient to get something like one of the D-Link or Lynksys routers. Setting up a computer to act as such a server is more expensive (a whole system dedicated to being a proxy server), and is more apt to have you spending more time administering this server. The router has a dedicated function, is far less expensive, and much easier to maintain.

Since I already had a 10/100 hub, I bought the Linksys router, that doesn't have any ports, and then connected my hub and cable modem to that. It handles all DHCP services for all of my computers to get on the Internet using one connection, or I can specify static IP's if I want. I have never had to administer the router except to set it up. That means no rebooting of computers, no operating system, driver, or other issues that go along with using a computer to supply these services.
