Suggestion for ADSL modem, modem/router, w/ disableable router; wht hpns w 2 routers?

At my work we recently did an ISP change and our old modem only supports up to 1.5mbps, and we have a 6mbps connection. ATT did provide us a with a modem router combination, buuut we have a SonicWall SP 170 router, with anti-virus and a few other protections provided through that router. So we want to keep this router and I think we need to purchase a ADSL modem (or modem/router combination where we can turn off the router functionality) to get this up and running again.


Is this correct? I'm starting to regret sleeping through my networking classes some time ago and I'm not sure what would happen if we hooked up 2 routers to each other, but the two "techs" (I'm not impressed of their knowledge level from what I've seen) I've talked to seemed to say this was a bad idea.

Right now I'm bypassing the SonicWall router and just using the ATT provided modem/router.




I've done some checking around for a modem, and damn it seems hard to find decent stand alone modems, so far the best I've seen is this D-link modem where a number of people were complaining that it appeared to block access to certain websites...

What is the brand and model number of the unit provided by AT&T?
You may be able to disable the router portion of the box.
The only downside to having another router on the path is the extra hop and the associated delays.

Good luck in your search. When I was searching for an ADSL modem, I noted as well that there just weren't many (if any) *good* options. Stay far away from AT&T's recommended Motorola offerings, though (I believe it's the 2210 model). I'd heard negative feedback about its reliability, but I ended up trying it anyway since I'd already had bad luck with a different modem (and there just weren't that many options). The Motorola lasted me 2 days before it died.

I currently have a Gnet BB0060-xi unit provided free by my ISP.
My ISP upgrades the model every couple of years at no cost.
I've not had any trouble with Gnet products.

The modem/router we got from ATT was a 2wire 3800HGV-B, as far as I can tell there is no manual for this unit (2wire website redirected me to ATT, who who had me search the web, and do things I'd already done...)

Since it's just an extra hop, I'm thinking of seeing if I can set the ATT modem/router to provide DMZ to the SonicWall router, so our paid tech support can still login remotely .

I'll defiantly check into the gnet modems, thank you for the suggestion ua549.

Here is a user guide.
DSL Reports has several documents for the unit. I don't know if any are technical manuals.
