    Oblivion. 720p or 1080p?

I am planning on getting this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824206048 sometime this year. I will be playing Oblivion on it and I can't remember if it is 720p or 1080p. I am leaning towards 720p ... hmm

    Any ideas guys?

I doubt it will be 1080p, if anything it would be 1080i with 720p support. Its going to look gorgious

You'll be playing it on what system? All games on XBOX360 are 720p.

That being said, this is one of the FEW instances (due to screen size) where a 1080p display would be to your benefit. However, it depends how far out the display is going to be.

Xbox360. I usually sit at least 6 feet away.. and with a screen this size.. well at least 55 inches plus.. i may sit farther.

I doubt 720p would be much different than 1080p.

Also 1080p televisions are expensive when you get 50" +

Yeah. Well, all XBOX360 games are 720p, so you are limited by that. 720p should still look really good on that screen, and the text should be very easily readable from 6' away.

My littler sister got a 37" Samsung LCD and it's about 6' away from her bed. She has the computer hooked up via VGA...and to be honest the text is NOT easily readable at 1280x720(720p). I mean, you can do it, but it's a strain on the eyes. It might look better if she had a better video card, or if it was hooked up via DVI, but I'm not sure it would make a world of difference in terms of readability. I am sure that if the 37" displays was capable of rendering 1080p resolution, standard text would be absolutely unreadable at 6'.

Until applications are designed with 1080p in mind, the text is just going to be to small. Stick with 720p for now. Don't waste your money on 1080p. That's my opinion anyway....but I do have quite a few HDTV displays. The only display I've ever seen where 1080p was worth it was on a 65" Sharp LCD. At 65" 1080p is just big enough that it can be read around the 6' distance. IMO, that's where 1080p really shines. Below that, in terms of size, it's kind of a wash.

1080p is more than double the pixels of 720p. I'd think that would be a pretty big difference, especially on a large display. Given the 360 only supports 720p, it doesn't really matter though.

It's double the resolution, but usually at a distance where your eye's can't focus in on the distance. It's hard to see the difference between 800x600 and 1600x1200 when you stand at the back of the room. That's exactly 4 times the resolution, and yet at certain distances you can no longer even tell. Same idea with TVs. I mean you CAN tell, but it doesn't look that different.

The 360 is 720p and 1080i only. Supposedly the PS3 is going to be 1080p. I have a 50" DLP and it does 720p and 1080i....I can't tell the difference. It looks the same. I have heard that the higher resolutions only help on extra large monitors.

Also I am not sure that TV is very good. That is just an old rear projection right? For games everyone is saying that DLP or LCD is the way to go. Also I hope that you are going to sit farther back then 6 ft from that thing. 60 inches is pretty big. Mine is 50 and I have to sit at least 8ft back or my eyes hurt. If I were you I would look at your room and the distance you want to sit at and what size TV you want.

For a couple bucks more you can get a better TV that may be a bit smaller. Also it won't take up as much room as it doesn't have a speaker stand thing built in and you can get some surround speakers. This will complete your 360 experience!

I have 56" DLP which internally upconverts everything to 1080p. Set side by side with my older 43" DPL which was 720p it's noticably better. And currently upconversion algorith used in TV sets from 1080i to 1080p isn't the best there can be, some pro video scalers do it much better. But even that simple upconversion still shows as an improvement.
As for 1080p source. There are not too many TVs that can accept 1080p anyway. My DLP is 1080p internally, but HDMI/COmponent sources accept only up to 1080i, for whatever reason only PC port can accept 1080p. Only HP and some mitsubishi TVs have 1080p input via HDMI.
    Hope this all made sense
