for some reason firefox isn't associating itself with the right codecs. you can get a third-party codec pack here which will allow you to view just about anything via firefox. it also includes Media Player Classic which is a really nice media player.
(don't anyone recommend CCCP. the last installer i tried contained trojans).

Can you play the stream in WMP by itself? If not, then there may be a problem with the player as a whole.
More likely though, look at your WMP settings and see if that particular file type is setup to be played in WMP. Maybe you have a different player taking over that video type and not letting WMP play it properly?
[edit]
Installing the K-lite codec pack didn't help? That throws a bit of a wrench into things. Does IE (or another browser) give you a similar error?

IE plays fine, always has... i just get the following error msg in firefox...
PLUGIN WARNING
The CNN.com video experience is optimized for Windows Media Player 9 or above.
No Windows Media Player detected.
Get the Player.
i have Windows Media Player 10. everything else works fine with it. i couldn't figure out the url on the cnn video (javascript), so i am not sure why it doesn't play it. i have all of the firefox default actions pointing to Windows Media Player.....

Get the Player.
I got that warning as well. It then gave me the option to Upgrade, Remind me later, or Continue to the video. Do you get those as well? When I just choose continue, it plays the video fine in whatever WMP is installed on my system (I think 7 or something).

i figured it out!!!!!!!!!
after uninstalling/reinstalling firefox like 3 times, i dug a little further and discovered that the WMP .dll's were missing from my Firefox Plugins folder. i just d-loaded them and boom i am back in business.
here is where i found the answer:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...06213#CheckWMP
If some of the files are still missing, you can download the individual files from dlldump.com:
* npdsplay.dll: http://www.dlldump.com/dllfiles/N/npdsplay.dll (this is the updated version)
* npwmsdrm.dll: http://www.dlldump.com/dllfiles/N/npwmsdrm.dll
* npdrmv2.dll: http://www.dlldump.com/dllfiles/N/npdrmv2.dll
Download them to the Firefox plugins folder (usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins) and then restart Firefox.
