Nvidia Throwing In The Towel on AMD/Intel Chipset Market

I was stunned to read this article on Ars Technica that said Nvidia is ceasing further research/development on chipset production for the AMD/Intel motherboard market. Although I'm partial to AMD, having more than one manufacturer to chose from is vital to us as consumers. Now I don't think that AMD would raise their chipset prices once Nvidia abandons the market, for they would be hard pressed to get anyone to buy their processors if the cost became prohibitive. I'd still prefer that we had more choices. First ULI, then SiS and Via. Now Nvidia is about to bow out. Not good at all.

I really wish they could've spun Soundstorm into it's own little group or sold it off to someone (Not Creative). It was really awesome at the time.

One less unreliable brand to gum up the listings when I'm shopping for a new board.

nVidia as a whole was a lot more awesome back then.

Yeah, nF2 ruled. nF4 even had some legs; the rig next to me is based on a s939 DFI board and it's been great these last ~3 years.

Funny that I've always had ATI cards and nV mobos, though it's never been an issue.

The last good nVidia chipset was the nForce 4 series. It's been all down hill since then. I know, I owned a 680i. I think it's a good thing that they're getting out of the chipset market, it was bleeding them of cash that they could have better spent elsewhere.

When you look at it, there really isn't much to the core logic market anymore anyway. Most functions are moving on to the CPU and as time goes by more and more functions that were once on the northbridge or southbridge will be moved onto the CPU die.
