    Question monitor refresh rates

I've posted this on the Tech Support forum, but nobody over there is as smart as you guys. What is the best setting for monitor refresh rate. Is the highest the best or just use a setting that's easy on your eyes? Mine is currently set at 75 Hz but is capable of supporting up to 100 Hz. Is there any damage to the monitor using a higher setting?

Some people are fixated while others like to cruise. Thanks for your suggestions.

set it to 100 mhz if your monitor will support it.. but more than 75 is better. Anything less really strains your eyes.

    Lightbulb

85 or more and you'll be fine. The flickering that the eye can see disappears at 85, but there is still flickering, so basically the higher you go the better.

I have a Radeon 8500 retail and a Sony 19" Trinitron flat screen.

    I run my desktop @ 140khz using a rez of 800x600.

    I run games @ 60khz using a rez of 640x480.

The Radeon 8500 simply can't play games higher than 60khz because it was never designed to be a gaming card.

khz? wow haha I think you mean hz 140khz would be an insane refresh rate.

I wonder what is optimal. I see that as a choice. Does this mean it varies with each program you use? Is this a good choice or should i just lock it too 75 or 85.

    Thanks.

check all the available refresh rates, and then for each one, stare at some point away from the monitor, like the wall above it. If it seems as the monitor vibrates, or flashes, then its a bad refresh rate since then yer eyes get tired after a while.

BTW, romm, where did ya pick up yer username, that is actually, by a little coincidence, my last name in RL .

In general you will not harm the monitor running higher refresh rates. Most modern monitors will go into sleep (low power) mode if you exceed the recommended horizontal or vertical refresh rates. I find it best to run the monitor at the manufacturers recommended resolution and refresh rate.

The key specification to tell what the monitors optimum resolution is the horizontal scan frequency.

    For example:

    A monitor with a 70 - 85Khz HSF is optimized for 1024 x 768 at 85Hz
    A monitor with a 92-97Khz HSF is optimized for 1280 x 1024 at 85Hz
    A monitor with a 107 - 110Khz HSF is optimized for 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz
    A monitor with a 121Khz HSF is optimized for 1900 x 1200

Also there is a direct correlation between HSF and price. As the HSF goes up, the resolution capability goes up and so does the price.
