How durable is an iPod?

Hi,

I just bought a new iPod mini, and I must say I am very pleased with it.

However, I am a little too "protective" with it, so to say.

Any time I put it in my pocket I think to myself, what if I drop it?

I don't like thinking about these things while trying to enjoy music.

So my question for you all is, can you tell me any experiences you have had, with dropping your iPod? How well does it hold up?

How durable are they?

I hear there is a miniture hard drive, an actual harddrive in these things, I mean that doesn't sound very durable to me, considering there is a harddrive in there?

Anyone have any pictures of the inside of an iPod?

How strong are these puppies?

How far has someone pushed the limits in term of trying to damage an iPod?

To me it sounds like the Shuffle is more durable, since there is no harddrive.

I would drop my iPod a few times to see how well it holds up, but I don't want to risk my 200 dollar purchase if you know what I mean.

i got the 40 gig.. I think I slammed it once on accedent.. still works great. Only prob is the damn thing scratches easily. So easily that my wonderful fabric/rubber case is managing to somehow scratch it also.

The mini is built from one block of anodized aluminum.I banged it a couple of times and no scratches. I haven't done anything extreme like what your thinking though.

Dropped my ipod dozens of time, still ticking. I also got the eXo black skin that is bascially scuba grade rubber, makes for a nice bounce instead of a loud slam when the ipod hits the ground. If you are really serious about damage I would suggest getting one of these cheap accessories. It also helps keep down on the scratching.

It probably will last quite a while under normal use, the hdd is designed to handle a fair amount of shock (like laptop drives).

Dropping it does have a chance of breaking it, and the harder the surface or the farther it falls the great the odds of a fatal drop.

But dont live your life worrying about things like this, I for a long time was way too careful with my electronics, but now that I see how quickly I replace them, I know to enjoy them while I still want to use them.

In 4 years a mp3 player the size of a sugar cube will hold your Ipod data in static storage, so why worry about it lasting that long?

I've dropped my 20GB iPod a couple times, but it was wearing its iSkin, so it just bounced and didnt take any damage at all.

I know people who's iPod's broke just from dropping it once, but it sounds like from other peoples experience they can be kind of durable.

I've had 3 ipods...

a 3g 15gb, and 2 4g 20gbs. They are amazingly durable, altho my first 20gb 4g's scroll wheel died after I dropped it one too many times. The screen seems to be the real problem. One of my friends fell with his ipod in his pocket. The screen broke and he sent it to some repair place and got it repaired for $170 . They sell screens on ebay for about $50, so I wouldnt be crazily concerned if something like this happens and you have a bit of modding know how.


My current 4g 20gb has some custom cut scren protectors on the screen and the back. No scratches at all. Then I have a clear iskin over that. I love my ipod.
