I need a router that does the following things...

I have been killing myself for the last couple of weeks trying to find a router that does a few simple things, but every router I try has just one stupid shortcoming that makes it useless.

This is what I need... I'm looking for a G router that handles:

Fixed IP assignment.
Port (range) forwarding.
TRAFFIC logging with the option to email logs on a set schedule

Everything I try fails at one of those, and usually, it's the logging. I had a netgear 814, but the log would empty itself all the time and the email function (though present) didn't work. I tried a WRT54G (stock firmware) but it didn't have fixed IP mapping, the log only stored IP addresses, and it had no emailing function. I tried a "level one" router, which had fixed IP, port forwarding, a log, and a working email function, but lo and behold, the log wasn't a TRAFFIC log... it was a useless "random router activity and meaningless bullcrap" log. I then tried the WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware, but with my luck, it ended up that I had a v5 WRT54G, so I could only use DD-WRT micro, which means.... you guessed it... no logging.


I really..... reeeally don't want to go through the process of setting up my entire network again only to find out that the router has some stupid flaw, so if anyone could point me to an option that you are 100% sure has all of the above requirements (and that they work ) then I would be eternally grateful.

(P.S. btw, I'm looking for an affordable consumer option, not some tricked out commercial router)

It might be worth revisiting the DD-WRT firmware, but consult the list if supported products, check this link out:

They even list prices for most models as well as specs.

They even list the WRT54GL as a model that support any version of the firmware.

From what I understand
WRT54G is the cheaper version with lower end specs
WRT54GL us the version with higher end specs geared for modding (DD-WRT firmware)

Take a look at the Buffalo WHR HP G54

It can transfer the Log to a Syslog Server address.

P.S. It is currently also the best 802.11g Router.

I have a Buffalo unit tbut it is running in Access Point mode only.
I am very happy with its performance and flexibility.
IIRC it cost ~$50 last year.
Even my old non-wireless Netgear router does everything you need.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm not looking to use a Syslog server. I'm looking to have the logs emailed. I know that this is possible, and there are consumer routers that do this (like the "level one" router I tried).

Also, no version of DD-WRT supports emailing of logs. I'd have to figure out how to install that feature myself (if possible). And I'm not a linux guy.

I'm really just looking for a router that has these features built-in. I know there has to be one out there. I've already tried a couple that come very close.

I'm sorry I missed the part about email. The Buffalo uses a syslog transfer to a syslog server IP address. The product is a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54.

My old Netgear FVS318 Pro Safe router can do both a syslog transfer and mail logs to a specific email address according to a schedule.

Because I use a syslog server I'm not sure what the email logs look like. I've never used that feature.

i have 2 of the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 routers running Tomato with WDS enabled... best router i have ever owned... awesome range, performance, and value... i found Tomato to be leaner and faster than DD-WRT

So the Tomato firmware definitely has a feature for emailing logs? If so, I'll probably look into that one.

I found a stock model that does what I want... Netgear WGR614. Unfortunately, all of the reviews from pretty much every website on the net say that it has a ~50% defect rate. There goes yet another option.
