hmm the thought never came to my head, but i suppose if you could wire it, or even get it to fit in your case where you dont have to take the side panel off everytime just to access it, itd be one sweet mod. unfortunatley i dont have a cd changer to mod just lying around

You could just buy something like this:

    http://dansdata.com/changer.htm

    It's only an 8X, though. I couldn't find anything newer/faster.

Yeah, Gateway used to bundle 3 CD changers with their systems back 7-8 years ago. It was 4X i think.

I saw an interesting thing on ebay the other day.

It wasn't exactly a cd changer, but it was a cd holder that looked like a cdrom. Went in your 5.25" and you hit a button... I'll try to find the link for you later

I've been thinking about this mod for quite a while, now. I never thought of converting a music CD-changer into a data-CD changer. An interesting path to follow...

With the majority of games now (well, I say now, but I mean since 1990 it seems. ) requiring the CD to be in the reader for the game to play, it would be very handy to have all (or a good portion) of your current game CDs to be in 'a' reader. If you could mount 6 to 10 CDs in the space of 2 5-1/4" drive bays (1 bay space to store the physical CDs and similar space to house the reading and changing hardware), then that would be worthwhile. You wouldn't have to hunt to find game CDs from games that you haven't played in a few months. They'd be right there ready to go.

You could also make accompanying software that would (now thanks to CDDB, it could happen automatically) categorize and label each CD. You could store information locally to "remember" the CD. Then you chould hold hundreds of CDs (in an external closure) and have all the info from each CD, including its physical location amongst the other discs. Imagine never having to re-organize your CD collection again, just because you bought a new album, but no space to add it in alphabetic order. Just throw it into the next availible slot in the stack, let CDDB figure out which CD it is, add all the info to the software database, and then BOOM, your CDs are re-organized.

You could make an internal rack for, say 6 CDs, or an external rack with a single (rounded) IDE (or similar) cable running out the back of your computer to a CD-changer. The holder could hold as many CDs as you can afford to make.

It would be a great product, especially considering the quality of soundcards and "PC" speakers on the market.
