266MHz Athlons

Which Thunderbird processors utilize the 266MHz FSB? I'm upgrading and I figured that while I'm spending money might as well do it right. I was planning on getting the Epox 8KTA3 and also wondered if that board can utilize the DDR memory or if it is SDRAM only.

I am not the best person to tell you about 266FSB. As of my understanding
266 is for 1.2Ghz(or 1.4Ghz) and higher processor only. Lower speeds of processor than that uses 200FSB. 266FSB only gives you the ability of upgrading the processor longer.

as of DDR. ASUS just realeased a board that uses DDR. Therefore the board u mentioned doesn't support DDR. DDR theoratically gives u twice the RAM speed (and almost twice a hole in ur wallet) than SDRAM. but benchmark performence doesn't suggest that its worth spending money on DDR (maybe until they start fully utilizing the speed of DDR).
For me DDR, is just an upgradability that i will like to have on the mobo but i will not go with it for at least until prices for DDR become more mainstream prices (i.e permnantly lower)

Actually you can make ANY Socket A processor work at 266 MHz FSB by lowering it's clock multiplier accordingly. I have a 1Gz t-bird that was set at 10x100 on my old board. I since got a Kt7a that fully supports the 133/266 FSB and I have the same t-bird running at 7.5x133 = 1GHz.

Untill yesterday i was confused by this.
So in a nutshell..... If you want to use the DDR ram, you will need the new 133fsb Bird and a MOBO that suports DDR (at this time there is not much bang for your buck there). Other wise buy the older 100fsb Bird, get a MOBO W/ 133a chipset, OC away and save some bux. Simply lower your clock multiplier an increase the fsb to 133 or greater. FSB * clock multiplier = cpu speed

266Mhz FSB Processor come in 1, 1.1 and 1.2 ghz fo far and are bein sold in several places. The only DDR motherboards around are the IWill266 and the AsusA7M266 both of which are not the best for the VIA KT266 chipset still has to come out on mobos. You can get any processor to do 266 though by downing the multiplyer and upping the fsb. eg: 12x100 is about the same as 9x133.

I don´t believe this is correct concerning the DDR motherboards. I´ve been looking at the new Soltek SL-75KAV-X ATX motherboard which supports either SD-RAM PC100/133 and DDR1600/2100. Also, it should be noted that it has got a fairly non-expensive price, far less expensive than the ASUS A7M266 motherboard.

Since the amount of pins on SDR and DDR is different that motherboard would have to have 2 SDR slots and 2 DDR slots, which is something Ive never seen before, What chipset does it use? The reason why a DDR solution is so expensive is that the prices of DDR memory is just too high. Mushkin charges $390 orso for 2100 256mb DDR and only 200 for 256mb High Performance rev 2.
This makes the RAM more than the ASuS A7M266. I personally am waiting for KT266 chipsets to be incorporated on boards.

I dunno if you've checked these forums but in the vidcard section there's like 250 "what card should I get and why?" posts. The cpu/oc used to have an overload of "What cooler and why?" threads. Now the 266 thread has been brought back a couple of times but if you look around, most things have. (theres 2 "what case should I get" around on pages 1 and 2)
