Need some help guys.
I'm set on buying new mobo chip and mem. Will keep my current parts etc.. just wanna hand dow my old proc and mobo to my little sis to give her an increase etc... ANYWAY, having some problems decideding what chip to get!
This whole Athlon XP **** has got me all confused... the 1600 is actually a 1.4 ghz right? Whats the difference between the 1600 and the Amd 1.4 T-bird 266??
The mobo I plan on getting is the Epox 8KHA+, good choice? or whould you suggest something else?
I think i'm set on the mobo, just need help on the cpu thanks.

If you get that board, make sure it is the newer KT266A board (much faster)
Difference between Palamino 1.4 and Tbird 1.4? Data prefetch, tweaked core, things like that. Nothing major, a 1.4 Tbird is still very fast. and yes, the AthlonXP 1600 is the palamino 1.4Ghz, it's renamed using "quantispeed" technology.

Sleeps with the Fishes
the 8KHA+ uses the new VIA kt266A north bridge, so it's the newer one...that's probably the best board on the market, even beats the best Nforce in about half the benchies. OK, AMD has gone pretty stupid, and put speed ratings on their chips that correspond to Intel p4 speeds. Basically, take what the chip is labeled i.e. athlon XP 1800 and -300 from it, there you go, it's really a 1.5Ghz chip. I think that's how it goes. Anyways, i wouldn't get the fastest XP (1800+ i think), it's $60 more than the 1700+ processor and there is virtually no difference in performance. Q3 you might get like 5fps more to your 100+fps which makes absolutely no difference.

For the price, I'd advise you to pick the 1.4GHz Tbird. Wait for Athlon XP to reach close to 2GHz...then it might be worth upgrading.

Direct from The Register (the first, and accurate site to break the news, *cough cough Trav2003 cough cough*) LOL:
<A HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/21938.html" TARGET=_blank>XP 1500 - 1.33GHz
XP 1600 - 1.4GHz
XP 1700 - 1.47GHz
XP 1800 - 1.53GHz </A>
The four improvments in the Athlon XPs (over the Thunderbirds) are as follows (direct from AnandTech's overview/preview):
An increase to L1 TLB Entries
Data Prefetch
SSE Instructions
On-Chip Thermal Diode
Enjoy yourself, and have fun. If you extensively use programs that have SSE optimizations, and you had dreams of using these programs will full acceleration (see a psychiatrist) Seriously though, then definitely think about picking up the Athlon XP over an older Thunderbird processor.
Peace

Hot damn these chips have SSE? Hrmmmmm Now I gotta rethink this, I do alot of video encodeing etc.... This might be benficital to my encode speeds. HMMM I just gotta calculate the prices for these bad boys.
Hope I can get the mobo chip and mem under 350ish...

The XP won't close in on 2.0. I think AMD will shelf it after ~1.73MHz. This would put it at a 13x multiplier on the EV6 bus. After this, I'm not sure exactly how AMD will go about incororating Tbred into the EV6 bus. They can either go with a 333FSB which throws a wrench into the whole backwards compatiblity concept. Otherwise, they'll have to remap all the multipliers (which wouldn't be that bad or that hard of a thing, and it would ensure backwards compatiblity). I think this depends mainly on the availability of 333MHz DDR SDRAM and how willing consumers will be to switch to a new motherboard at launch.

True...
But I guess they could goo alll the way up to the 40x Multiplier??? LOL
