    Angry ethernet problems

I just got a couple of ethernet cards and a cable to hook them up (primarily for cable internet sharing). I installed both of them, no problems there, ran the cable through the ceiling to the other computer, no problem there, plugged it in and nothing happened. There is a light on the cards that illuminates when there is a connection, but it's not one. I don't really even know where to start trouble shooting, and suggestions?

what sort of cable? If you are running out of one pc and straight into another, you need to use a crossover cable...

have you setup IP addresses for the two pcs?

If it's from one computer to another you do need a crossover. If you bought the cable in a store then you probably got a patch (straight-thru). If you know anyone who has worked with Cat 5 cabling they can probably cut on end and change the wiring to make it a crossover. If it's not making any connection (no lights flashing on the NIC), then it's a physical problem. So you don't need IPs for those lights to be on.

thanks guys, but I've changed plans (due to windows not letting me use two ethernet cards) and am getting a router. Besides that, it was the cable, and I will configure the IPs and whatnot when I get the router and other cables that I'll need.
